What is Discipleship? Being Rooted in Christ

Guest Post: Gus Hernandez, Jr.

Discipleship has become a popular word these days in ministry circles. Therefore, it has become harder and harder to decipher what people mean when they use the word discipleship.

In an effort to clarify the word discipleship, I want to first start off with what it is not. Discipleship is NOT aligning with a certain doctrinal position. Discipleship is NOT assimilation into a program, institution, or a system.

Real Discipleship IS teaching people to sink their roots into the person of Jesus Christ. Only when a person is taught to be rooted and grounded in Christ will they learn what it really means to be a fully devoted follower of Christ. Only when believers are intentionally equipped with the Word of God through accountable relationships empowered by the Holy Spirit will we truly replicate mature followers of Christ.

Colossians 2:6-7, “Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Don’t settle for pointing people toward an organization or a system. Instead, introduce people to the person of Jesus and teach them to rely on Him as the only foundation worth building their lives upon.

Remember it is Christ we proclaim. Nothing else is worth living for. Nothing else in this world deserves all of our devotion, time, energy, and effort.

Colossians 1:28-29, “Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”

Do you know Jesus personally and intimately?
Is Jesus your firm foundation?
Is Jesus first among many, or is He your all and in all?
If so, how are you helping others sink their roots into Jesus?

The most effective disciplemakers teach people to sink their roots into Jesus Christ.
