You know you should be meet in a discipleship group, but you don’t have a clue where to begin. When we don’t know what to do, we don’t do anything at all. Checklists are invaluable tools for navigating challenging tasks. Here are 5 steps to take before Beginning a Discipleship Group:
1. Pray: Ask God for Wisdom
Before selecting anyone to follow him, Jesus spent a considerable amount of time in prayer, particularly the night before selecting the 12. Luke 6:12-13, “In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles.” Before you talk to men about God, talk to God about men (or women).
2. Prepare: Work out the details
Prior to your first meeting, you should be prepared to answer these questions:
- Where are you going to meet?
- What time will you meet?
- How long will you meet?
- What will you study?
- What Scriptures will you memorize?

3. Perceive: Analyze potential group members Your D-Group should consist of F.A.T. believers: Faithful, Available, and Teachable. You are looking for believers who have a desire to grow in their, a passion for the things of God, and a disposition to learn. Look for people who are already in your concentric circles: church, sunday school class, small group, job, neighborhood, etc. 4. Proceed: Gather a group of people After identifying a few potential people, prayerfully approach two to three individuals and ask, “Would you be interested in studying the Bible together? Would you be interested in memorizing Scripture and praying together?” I have personally found that many people are open to that. All you have to do is ask. Never say, “Would you like for me to disciple you?” as this question may come across in a derogatory manner. Keep in mind, men should disciple men, and women should disciple women. 5. Participate: Get in the Game There are 3 types of people in the world:- Those who make things happen
- Those who watch things happen
- Those who wonder, “What the heck just happened.”
